GE (NYSE: GE) gas turbine technology has been selected for the expansion of the Krakatau Daya Listrik (KDL) power plant in Cilegon, province of Banten, Indonesia. The plant provides electricity for PT Krakatau Steel, the largest steelmaker in Indonesia, with the excess output going to the country’s power grid.
GE will supply two 6B Gas Turbines, which will boost the site’s energy production by 120 megawatts when they enter combined-cycle operation in 2013. Initially, the two units will operate in simple cycle, producing a total of 80 megawatts. In addition to boosting the power output, the 6B technology will help to improve plant efficiency by nearly 15 percent, supporting the government’s energy saving initiatives.

KDL also has signed a 16-year contractual service agreement (CSA) with GE for the power plant expansion. GE CSAs cover the supply of parts, repairs and field services for maintenance outages of gas turbines and generators. These long-term agreements are structured to provide customers with predictable maintenance costs while ensuring a steady flow of revenue from power plant operations. To date, GE has long-term service agreements including CSAs in place at more than 700 sites worldwide.
The GE 6B Gas Turbines will be shipped to the project site in February 2012 and will start simple cycle operation around August 2012, prior to entering combined-cycle service in early 2013. They will operate on natural gas supplied by Perusahaan Gas Negara, the state-owned gas distribution company.
The GE 6B Gas Turbine is one of the most widely used gas turbines ever manufactured. More than 1,100 of these units are in service or on order worldwide and have accumulated more than 60 million operating hours in a wide range of applications.
