The Power Finance Corporation, India’s agency for Ultra Mega Power Projects (UMPP), has invited preliminary bids for the development of two UMPPs in Bedabahal (Odisha) and Cheyyur (Tamil Nadu). Both projects would have a capacity of 4,000 MW and would be developed on a DBFOT (design, build, finance, operate and transfer) model. Estimated investment in each UMPP is approximately Rs 20,000 crore (US$3,178m). The plants would be coal-fired, with coal sourced from the Meenakshi mines. So far, four UMPPs have been awarded of which three, namely Sasan (Madhya Pradesh), Krishnapatnam (Andhra Pradesh) and Tilaiya (Jharkhand), have been bagged by Reliance Power.
