Siemens’ 578 MW SGT5-8000H gas turbine achieved an efficiency level of 60.75 percent, eclipsing an industry goal of 60 percent.

Six 60 Hz version of the turbines are on order for combined-cycle power plants owned by Florida Power & Light. The turbines are in production and will be sent to FPL in 2012.

The turbine reached the goal of more than 60 percent efficiency at the Irsching 4 combined-cycle test facility in Bavaria over an 18-month test period. Siemens invested more than EUR500 million ($713.4 million) in the turbine development, which was a collaboration between Siemens and Westinghouse. The turbine is designed for 400 MW in simple-cycle use and 600 MW in combined-cycle duty. More than 500 MW can be put online within 30 minutes and stable load gradients of 35 MW a minute can be run.
