German utility RWE and Kompania Weglowa have signed an initial contract to set up a new company to build a new EUR1.5bn ($1.95bn), 800 MW coal-fired power plant in Wola in the Silesia region of Poland.

Its commissioning is planned for the beginning of 2015. So far, a feasibility study has been conducted and details of technical aspects of the investment have been worked out.

The new company will be registered by RWE and Kompania Weglowa as soon as the approval of the Polish Office of Fair Trading is received. A final investment decision based on economic viability has yet to be made.

RWE and Kompania Weglowa have also signed a coal supply contract for the new plant, which is expected to be the largest hard coal fired power plant in Poland. The facility is expected to have an efficiency of 46 per cent.

The new power station will be built based on the design of the former hard coal mine Piast Ruch II, formerly KWK Czeczott, owned by Kompania Weglowa.

Filip Thon, CEO of RWE in Poland, said: «The investments planned and already implemented in Poland by RWE will be in the order of EUR2.5bn. This makes RWE one of the largest foreign investors in Poland. I am glad we are collaborating with such a professional partner as Kompania Weglowa.»

Kompania Weglowa will play a significant role in the project, contributing the site, the supply of coal and the infrastructure required during construction.
