Award represents second and third large-scale energy project wins in three years
Marubeni Corporation has selected Black & Veatch to support the balance-of-plant design and procurement for the expansion of two large power generation facilities in Thailand. Combined, the projects represent an investment of approximately US$ 1 billion by the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT), the owner of both facilities.
“Thailand’s economic recovery accelerates the need for additional new generation capacity to keep up with demand within the country and region,” said Dr. Hoe Wai Cheong, Managing Director, Asia and Middle East, India, Europe and Africa (MEIEA), Black & Veatch’s global energy business. “When completed in 2014, the combined expansion projects will provide 1,500 megawatts of additional capacity – the equivalent to power more than 1.5 million homes.”
The projects involve adding a new power block to the Chana Combined Cycle Power Plant (Chana 2) in the Songkhla province, and a fourth combined cycle power block to the Wang Noi facility (Wang Noi 4) in Ayutthaya province. Chana 2 will consist of two, single-shaft combined cycle trains, each approximately 390 megawatts. This arrangement, the first of its kind in Thailand, provides more flexibility for power plant operation and will improve plant efficiency.
Marubeni, in consortium with Siemens AG and Siemens Limited (Thailand), was awarded a lump sum engineering, procurement and construction contract for both projects. Black & Veatch will provide Marubeni with design engineering and procurement for balance-of-plant equipment and other services including technical field assistance, supply of the heat recovery steam generators and commissioning of other Black & Veatch furnished plant equipment.
“Dating back to 1965, Black & Veatch has helped design and commission close to one-third of Thailand’s power supply beginning with our first power project win with EGAT,” said Dean Oskvig, President and CEO of Black & Veatch’s global energy business. “We are proud of our history in Thailand and excited about continuing our support of local economic development; bringing value to our clients and business partners. As part of our global expansion plans, we are continuing to invest in and mobilize talent to deliver excellent projects. These most recent awards represent the second and third large-scale energy projects we have undertaken in Thailand with Marubeni in the last three years.”
