Collaborative research for innovative propulsion systems

Sulzer Metco, a leading surface solutions provider, announced today that it has become an Organizing Industry Member of the Commonwealth Center for Advanced Manufacturing (CCAM).

The CCAM manufacturing research facility is a public/private partnership between companies—including Canon, Chromalloy, Newport News Shipbuilding, Rolls Royce, Sandvik Coromant, and Siemens—, and Virginia’s leading public research facilities—the University of Virginia, Virginia Tech and Virginia State University.

«Sulzer Metco is pleased to join this collaborative research community that will set the direction of future technology developments for advanced manufacturing applications in surface engineering and manufacturing systems,» said Cesar Montenegro, President of Sulzer Metco. «The CCAM will play a significant role in propulsion system advancement and innovation and underlines our commitment to customer partnership. Its initial focus on surface engineering allows for the full implementation of thermal spray materials, equipment and process solutions provided by Sulzer Metco.»

In September 2012, CCAM will open a 60,000 square foot (5.500 square meter) facility with computational and large-scale production laboratories, as well as open production space for heavy equipment and surface coating processes. Sulzer Metco is contributing with a state-of-the-art robotic thermal spray cell. The facility is adjacent to Rolls-Royce’s new manufacturing plant at Crosspointe, near Petersburg, which will manufacture discs for some of most advanced civil aerospace engines of Rolls Royce.
