Siemens Energy has been given full notice to proceed (NTP) from York Energy Centre LP for the supply of two highly efficient SGT6-PAC 5000F gas turbine-generators and supporting gas turbine auxiliaries for the York Energy Centre power plant located in the Township of King, Ontario (approximately five kilometers north of Toronto). The 400-MW, natural gas-fired plant will supply highly efficient and environmentally compatible power to over one million people living in the northern York region. The York Energy Centre power plant will be commissioned in the second quarter of 2012.

This plant will supply power during times of peak demand and provide critical grid support that assists the Independent Electric System Operator (IESO) in meeting North American grid reliability standards. “We are very pleased that York Energy Center LP has chosen Siemens as a provider for its York Energy Centre power plant. With high operational readiness and flexibility, Siemens gas turbines are a reliable source of electricity able to respond during peak periods, as well as when other more variable energy sources are not available,” stated Michael Suess, CEO of Siemens Energy’s Fossil Power Generation Division. “Because of this, gas turbines will continue to play a key role in the future energy mix.”

The SGT6-5000F gas turbine, with over 6.5 million fleet operating hours of experience, is built on proven technology and utilizes an evolutionary design philosophy. By enhancing proven designs and incorporating technology upgrades and improvements through this evolutionary process, the SGT6-5000F has achieved 98% reliability.

“The York Energy Centre will play a key role in addressing the need for quick-response peaking generation clearly identified by the Ontario Power Authority (OPA) for the northern York region, and reducing grid reliance on coal-fired generating capacity,” said Jeffry M. Myers, President and Chief Executive Officer of Pristine Power, parent company of York Energy Center LP.

Highly efficient gas turbines are an important feature of Siemens’ environmental portfolio. In fiscal 2009, revenue from the Portfolio totaled approximately EUR23 billion, making Siemens the world’s largest supplier of environmentally friendly technologies. In the same period, our products and solutions enabled customers to reduce their CO2 emissions by 210 million tons. This amount equals the combined annual CO2 emissions of New York, Tokyo, London and Berlin.
