Alstom has been awarded a framework contract worth €110 million ($150 million) over the next several years by American Electric Power (AEP) to upgrade the Low Pressure (LP) steam turbines across their 1300 MW coal-fired power plant fleet. The fleet upgrade framework contract includes seven plants located in Ohio, Indiana and West Virginia. AEP’s 1300 MW coal fleet is among the largest in the world.
Alstom will upgrade the LP steam turbines by implementing its state-of-the-art rotating and stationary blade design technology. The upgrade will allow AEP to continue to operate its assets with an improved efficiency and a high level of reliability. The upgrades will be performed over a period of several years, with the first unit being commissioned in 2013.
Commenting on this framework contract, Hans-Peter Meer, Senior Vice President, Alstom Thermal Services said, “We are proud to be chosen by AEP to continue to modernize their 1300 MW coal-fired fleet. Alstom’s upgrade solutions allow our customers to generate cleaner power and operate their units in a more efficient manner. These upgrades constitute an important part of Alstom’s Clean Power and service solutions to improve the performance of the existing installed base of coal-fired generation which contributed to about 45% of the electricity produced in the United States in 2010.”
