<…> Costs are falling in Europe. German research institute Trend:Research sees the cost of hard coal fired power plants falling to EUR1400-1600/kW ($1860-2130) from the current EUR1700/kW, mainly due to falling steel costs.
On Tuesday, Alstom’s chief executive Patrick Kron said orders for new power plant equipment would drop in the fiscal year 2009/10, as independent power producers have found it harder to obtain financing.
However, healthy order backlogs mean the likes of GE, Siemens and Alstom are doing just fine. It is the smaller renewables manufacturers who have borne the brunt of the credit crunch so far, but the combination of lower prices and economic stimulus financing augurs well.
