Siemens Energy has received an order from the Netherlands for turnkey construction of a combined cycle power plant. Purchaser of the 435-megawatt Hemweg 9 plant is the Dutch utility Nuon, a subsidiary of Vattenfall A.B. Siemens will also be responsible for plant maintenance. This gas-fired plant, which will attain a very high efficiency level of approximately 59 percent and offer maximized operational flexibility with low nitrogen oxide emissions, will supply ecofriendly power to more than 750,000 Dutch households. The start of commercial operation is scheduled for late 2012.

Following the power plant projects of Sloe, Rijnmond and Enecogen, this is the fourth order that Siemens has won in the Netherlands for turnkey construction of a combined cycle power plant since 2007. “This new order, which we’ve secured within a year after the Enecogen project, clearly shows that combined cycle power plants will play an increasingly important role in the fleets operated by European utilities. Because they ensure load balancing with increasing wind-based feed-in and at the same time meet the more stringent environmental requirements,“ said Michael Suess, CEO of the Fossil Power Generation Division of Siemens Energy. In addition to turnkey construction Siemens will supply the gas turbine, the steam turbine, the generator and the entire electrical equipment and I&C system.

High-efficiency combined cycle power plants are part of Siemens’ Environmental Portfolio. In fiscal 2009, revenue from the Portfolio totaled about EUR23 billion, making Siemens the world’s largest supplier of ecofriendly technologies. In the same period, the company’s products and solutions enabled customers to reduce their CO2 emissions by 210 million tons. This amount equals the combined annual CO2 emissions of New York, Tokyo, London and Berlin.
